CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Mary
Age: 9
Canon: Ib
World Description: here
History: here
Death: She was burned alive.
What are your plans for this character in-game? In death, I plan for Mary to find meaning in her life. A life that she was robbed of, a life that was never really real or full of substance. I want her to understand the things that have puzzled or baffled her, and I want to see her learn from her mistakes. There will be backslides, and tears, and angry outbursts, but overall I hope for her to find her family, and her reality, in the place that comes after her canon story. Someday, amidst the fright and the darkness, I hope for her to discover humanity for herself, and truly grasp the meaning of the concept.
What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? The main basis for this game, its most notable setting features, darkness and fire, are Mary's two biggest fears. So right out of the gate, I'm really excited to see how she'll react and adapt to this kind of environment. Maybe with the support of others, she'll be ale to overcome these fears...or maybe she'll lash out in her constant struggle to adapt. Having to rely on the thing which destroyed her is, in and of itself, an exciting concept.
How does your character generally get along with other people? It depends! Mary tends to have two reactions to people: she either loves them, or she envies them. For the most part, Mary approaches anyone and everyone with a desire to make nice. The problem is when someone makes her feel threatened--makes her pre-standing friendship with another person seem less meaningful. That's when she'll become hateful and rude, because even if she likes someone, how dare they try to interfere with something that she wants so badly? Ah, but even then, she has a hard time turning that anger into hate. She's jealous, but she craves constant approval and attention. Even upon rejection, she'll stubbornly dog a person's heels.
What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? Fragile is probably a good word for it. At Mary's core is a desire to be seen as and to live life as a normal human girl...even if this is impossible for her, due to the nature of her being. She comes from a point in her canon where she's been forsaken by the only friend she's ever been able to make, and was struggling with the reality that the only way to escape her worldly prison was to turn a knife on the one she cares about most. The circumstances of her death deal largely with a mutual misunderstanding of one another's motives, each party, Mary and Ib, believing that the other had to be destroyed for their own means of survival. Although she desperately longs to be loved, she finds herself unable to fully put her trust in any one person. After all, what if they try and kill her? What if she has to kill them? Add to that the loose grasp on "death" and what it means that she already has, and you have a recipe for disaster. It's a constant internal tightrope walk between the happy-go-lucky Mary and the Mary who will do anything to survive.
Personality: Mary is a kind, gentle-hearted little girl. She’s playful and loves cute things and sweet things, but she can always seem to find something darling in anything no matter how deceptively unnerving its appearance may be. With a big imagination, she loves to draw all the things that she wishes she could go out and see all the time! She also loves stories, and reading, and having people her own age to talk to. Laughter and excitement are the sort of things that make life worth living, so she can get a little carried away sometimes, but she knows how to be a proper, dainty, and well behaved girl, too.
All of this is true.
But Mary is nothing more than a painting. She only exists in a place called the Fabricated World, a haunting, dangerous art gallery where the famous works of the late artist Guertena come to life and roam. There’s no sunshine here. There are no people. The siblings she finds in her other paintings have no real grasp of the things that they’re missing. She wants. She craves. Why is the world that’s described in her books a world that she is not allowed to exist in? Why can’t she have a mother like a real little girl, and why has her father abandoned her?
It isn’t fair.
Mary is a creature torn between the smiling child that she was imagined onto a canvas and the empty, ravenous hole in her heart. She’s so lonely, you see. She’s so very confused. There is no concept for her of life and death, only sorrow and joy. And want, of course. Want, want, want, want. She wants to be free, more than anything. Enough to sacrifice a friend. Enough to sacrifice anything in her way. Nobody is allowed to get between her and the life that she has imagined for herself. If they do, it’s enough to make her go crazy. It’s enough to make her tear down walls and rip the skin off of a person’s face with her teeth.
But oh, it’s okay. She’s a very good girl! Please don’t be afraid.
Items: A palette knife, a fake yellow rose, and an outfit consisting of a green dress, dark stockings, and black mary-janes. Her clothing smells of smoke and oil paint, and the edges are charred black and tattered.
Skills/Abilities: If you count having red paint in place of blood, that’s basically it.
Flaws/Weaknesses: mental instability, a penchant for violence and deceit, fear of fire and darkness, abandonment issues, has no proper understanding of the concepts of life or death, jealousy and possessiveness, physically weak, stubborn, bad at listening, and plays very obvious favorites. With a general unfamiliarity to the concept of humanity as a whole, tends to view even the people she loves and cares for deeply as expendable where it concerns her own self-interest.
