Week 0, Post Trial - Newt

[Mary feels a little bit bad for scolding Newt when he was fighting with Ichigo, so once the trial's over, she runs after him so she can throw her arms around his middle and hold on.]

Good. I don't want you to ever hate me.

[Mad escalated to "hate" very quickly, but subtleties aren't exactly her specialty. Taking a deep breath, Mary unwinds from him just a little.]

You were right, too. I just don't like it when adults get so loud.

I'm not gonna hate you, don't worry. [He notes the escalation but just chalks it up to kid-talk, honestly.]

You think so? I mean, um, I'd love to know your take on all of this. This stuff isn't easy for anyone, but I bet you're in a little over your head here.

What do you mean about my take? Um...I guess it's hard for me to put together. I've never been to a trial before. I've never seen people so upset.

Yeah... I haven't either to be honest. [A beat.] Been to a trial, I mean.

[What does he mean by "her take" though? He's not even sure. He can barely process all of what just happened himself, and now he's asking a kid to do it. Not his best move.]

I, uh, I don't know if you're worried about this, but I'm not gonna let anything bad happen to you, alright? You can stay with me and Hermann during curfew if you want. We can color and play games or something.

[He knows this is kind of an empty offer since apparently everyone just conks out and is powerless to stop any murdering from happening, but, still. Maybe it'll give her some peace of mind.]

[Mary gives Newt her biggest smile, holding onto his hands.]

I believe you. I have Lenka, too, and he's really scary to look at. Between all of you, there's no reason I can ever be afraid! That sounds like a lot of fun, so as long as I make sure and check in first I'd be really happy if I could stay with you sometimes. What kind of games do you like to play?

Yeah, that's true... [He'd hope anyone would think twice about messing with Mary both because she's a kid and because she's got a giant monster cat for a partner, but consider him concerned just the same.]

Lenka can come too so you guys don't have to split up. [Since as much as he hates being soulbound to Hermann, splitting up partners seems like maybe a bad idea.]

Uh... All kinds, I guess? [He hasn't thought this through. His head immediately goes to party games, but, uh, nine-year-old.] There's probably not a ton of actual games just lying around here, but we can make something up. Like, uh, 20 Questions or something. That kind of thing.
