Week 1, Post-Execution: Newt
[Well, that was gay. And Mary didn't even get to see any of it because it got so gay. But...she's feeling kinda down about the whole thing, so she finds a park bench to lay down on and watches as the cherry blossom petals fall on top of and all around her. Sometimes, she snags one out of the air and runs them through her fingers.]
Flowers are sooooo pretty.
Flowers are sooooo pretty.

Yeah, those are nice. Pretty, despite, uh... Everything. I hope the overall scenery's better tomorrow, though.

You mean, like, less trash all over the place?
no subject
Yeah, that's what I mean. Keeping the flowers would be nice, though.
[He plucks the blossom off of his shoulder and twirls it between his fingers. Despite being a biologist, he's never really cared much about plants. They're kind of boring, in his opinion, at least when compared to stuff that actually breathes. Now that he's dead though, he likes them a bit more.]

[She has her priorities firmly sorted. There's a pause while she watches him play with the blossom.]
Are you scared?
no subject
[He stops and looks at her.]
Um. Of what?
no subject
[She slides a foot forward and nudges him with her shoe.]
That somebody's gonna come after you.
[Mary sighs, then reaches down and pulls her stuffed blobfish out from where she had it tucked away under the bench and squeezes it.]
I wasn't really scared about it at all before.
no subject
Um... [He's not sure how honest he should be with her. She's just a kid, so it would be best to lie and say he's not worried at all, right? But Mary's stuck playing this game the same as everyone else here. Her age isn't going to change that.]
Yeah, I guess I am scared. I'm trying not to think about it too much. It's not... I mean, it's not like there'd be anything I could do if someone did try to come after me, y'know?
[He focuses his attention on the flower, happy to have something to do with his hands. He smooths out the petals.]
But I don't think you need to worry too much. No one's gonna kill you. You're too young and sweet for that kind of thing.
no subject
[She's not an amazing judge of character.]
I hope that's how people really feel about me. But I wonder if it matters what I'm like when only so many people get to live again.
[There's a pause, and Mary gives a sad laugh.]
I'm sorry! I guess I'm just in kind of a bad mood, I don't mean to sound so...so gloooooomy!
no subject
Really? Um. Well, thanks... But, I mean, strong people get scared too. Everyone gets scared sometimes. It just matters what you do about it, I guess. I'm not going to let being scared back me into a corner, y'know? We're in this situation whether we like it or not, so we may as well make the best of it.
[He licks his lips, not sure he's the best person to have this conversation with her. He doesn't like having to be the responsible adult. Hermann would probably be better at this. God.]
I... I think it does matter. You deserve another shot at living, Mary. [He shrugs.] You're a good person, but, uh, it's not like you got a fair chance the first time around. The rest of us had more time.
